‘The theatre of the book’: marginalia and mise en page in the Cardiff Rare Books Restoration Drama Collection
Melanine Bigold is Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Cardiff and co-founder of the Families, Identities, and Gender Research Network. She researches women’s intellectual and literary histories, manuscript culture, and the history of the book.  She is the author of Women of Letters, Manuscript Circulation and Print Afterlives in the Eighteenth Century: Elizabeth Rowe, Catharine Cockburn and Elizabeth Carter (Palgrave, 2012). She is writing a joint biography of George Ballard and Elizabeth Elstob, and leads a project to produce a database of marginalia in Restoration-era drama texts in the Cardiff Rare Books Restoration Drama Collection. Her QMCECS paper will explore how marginalia in a single genre, drama, can provide new insights and understanding about how readers conceptualized both reading and watching plays.

Chair: Tessa Whitehouse

Time: 5.00-7.00pm.

Venue: Seminar Room, Lock-Keeper’s Cottage Graduate Centre, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End, London, E1 4NS.
